Stanley Wiater: Member of Horror Writers of America Stanley Wiater Leonard Wibberly, full name Leonard Patrick O'Connor Wibberly (9 Apr 1915-22 Nov 1983) Irish journalist, editor, bureau chief; reporter/editor of the Chicago Tribune, side-by-side with David Brin's father; best known for the series of political thriller spoofs "The Mouse That Roared" and "The Mouse on the Moon", the latter filmed and nominally science fiction, and also: * Homeward to Ithaka [Morrow, 1978] * One in Four [Morrow, 1976] * The Quest of Excalibur [Putnam, 1959] * 11 mystery/detective novels under pseudonym Leonard Holton, with series character Father Joseph Bredder * 22 unrelated novels as Leonard Wibberly, including the "Mouse" series: * The Mouse That Roared [Boston: Little Brown, 1955] * Beware of the Mouse [New York: Putnam, 1958] * The Mouse on the Moon [New York: Morrow, 1962] nominally science fiction, {film hotlink to be done} * The Mouse on Wall Street [New York: Morrow, 1969] * The Mouse that Saved the West [New York: Morrow, 1981] * 20 juvenile novels [some mystery/detective, at least one "Encounter Near Venus" science fiction] * 16 juvenile novels as Patrick O'Connor * 6 juvenile novels as Christopher Webb * 6 plays * 1 ballet scenario "Encounter Near Venus" * 2 books of poetry for children * 14 nonfiction books (humor, history, travel) * 11 nonfiction juveniles (history, biography) Elizabeth Wicker: Elizabeth Wicker Stewart Wieck (Stewart von Allmen): * Conspicuous Consumption [HarperCollins] Susan Wiggs: Susan Wiggs Jimmy Wilde, pseudonym for John Creasey Lady Wilde, pseudonym for Lady Jane Francisca Speranza Wilde Oscar Wilde: here listed for "The Happy Prince and Other Fairy Tales" [1882-1891]. First told orally for his children, then (when published) immediately acclaimed as the most beautifully written stories for children ever penned. Yet they are also for adults, and for literary adults at that. Who else would be able to grasp the bitter irony, the cloying beauty, the undertone of wistfulness and regret over life's cruelties and inexplicabilities. An artful artlessness lingers in their superb musical cadences and faultless imagery. A hothouse quality of unreality, of a vapory combination of Fragonard, Rossetti, and Wordsworth, of studied ingenuousness, pervades all these stories. There is also the unmistakable influence of Pre-Raphaelite painting in them, and of Walter Pater's escapist erudition. One's attention is fascinated by the glitter of precious stones the sheen of metal, the scents of exotic flowers, the pungency of rare spices, and the ravishment of beautiful brocades and silks. And to heighten the antique effect, Wilde evokes the pastoral simplicity of Biblical language. All words are treated musically. A striking device, taken from poetry, the repetition of particular phrases, conjures up soft harmonies and a sensuous languor. Allen Wilder, pseudonym for John W. Jakes Cherry Wilder, pseudonym for Cherry B. Grimm: * The Luck of Brin's Five [Athenaeum, 1977] Eric Wilding, pseudonym for E. C. Tubb John H. Wiley, housename and pseudonym for Roger P.
